Canada's job market soars, highest in 41 years

The Canadian economy ended the year on a positive note, adding 80,000 jobs in the month of December, leaving a total of 423,000 jobs created for 2017. Canada is experiencing its highest employment rate in 41 years, with an unemployment rate at 5.7%.

The majority of jobs created in 2017 were full-time jobs (394,000), having an hourly wage of $26.68 CAD. With Canada granting permanent residence to approximately 330,000 individuals in 2018, new immigrants to Canada can be assured there are jobs for them.

25% of jobs created in 2017 were in Finance and real estate, as well as high-paid positions in professional, scientific and technical services (including Information Technology). Manufacturing added about 86,000 spots and construction gained 51,000 positions. Natural resources and mining, rebounded slightly with 15,000 new jobs.

Ideal time to immigrate to Canada

The IRCC will begin selecting a larger number of candidates to apply for PR at the beginning of the year, resulting in much lower CRS scores. Last year saw a low CRS score of 413. With the quota for 2018 being 5% higher than 2017 (80,000+ for this year under Express Entry), the pattern in CRS scores from last year will likely repeat in 2018.

The ideal candidate under Express Entry has a score of 415+. To calculate your Express Entry score, use our Express Entry CRS Calculator.
